A Few Simple French Words & Phrases

Something that is common in every language (and French is no exception) is the fact that you use some words more than others.

Some of the most common words we use in French are also the things that beginners need to learn straight away.

Firstly, you’ll need to know how to say hello. In French, you can use a more formal version and a less formal version.

The more formal word for hello is Bonjour. A less formal way is Salut. This word is like saying “Hi!” in English.

Also, Salut can be used to say “Bye”. It is prounced like this: “sah-lew”.

 To say thank you in French, you will say “Merci”. This literally means “Thank You”. You can also say “Merci beaucoup”… Which means “Thank you very much”.

To ask someone how they are, you would say “Comment allez-vous?” This is pronounced like this: koh-mawn tahl-ay voo. This literally means “How are you?”

To say “Please” in French, you would say “S'il vous plait” which is pronounced like this: seel voo pleh.
