Learning The French Months and
Days
Another important part of French vocabulary is
the days of the week, the months of the year, and the four
seasons. With this in mind, here are the translations:
Monday = lundi
Tuesday = mardi
Wednesday = mercredi
Thursday = jeudi
Friday = vendredi
Saturday = samedi
Sunday = dimanche
January = janvier
February = fevrier
March = mars
April = avril
May = mai
June = juin
July = juillet
August = aout
September = septembre
October = octobre
November = novembre
December = decembre
Note: The months of the year in French
do not start with a capital letter as they do in English…unless
they are at the start of a sentence.
summer = l’ete
winter = l’hiver (m.)
autumn = l’automne (m.)
spring = le printemps
Here's a quick note on usage (learn
this if you want to get things perfect, but if you don't...
you'll still get by) Use the preposition en to express “in”
with months and seasons, except with printemps, when au is
used:
en juillet = (in July)
en septembre = (in September)
en decembre = (in December)
en mai = (in May)
en ete = (in the summer)
en automne = (in the fall)
en hiver = (in the winter)
au printemps = (in the spring)
An important fact to remember if you
have a lot of appointments in a French-speaking country is that
French calendars start with Monday as the first day of the
week, rather than Sunday.
